If you’re ready to reduce or eliminate breastfeeding overnight but the thought of taking away such an important source of comfort feels overwhelming, this guide has been created for you.
Night Weaning Your Toddler is a carefully considered, step-by-step guide for parents who want to make changes gently, while continuing to offer their child plenty of comfort, reassurance and connection throughout the process.
Toddler night weaning is an area I’ve developed a particular interest in throughout my many years of supporting families with sleep. I understand that breastfeeding at night is about so much more than milk. It can represent warmth, touch, closeness, reassurance and a familiar way of returning to sleep.
That’s why my approach doesn’t simply ask you to remove the breast and hope your toddler adapts.
Instead, I’ll show you how to gradually separate breastfeeding from falling asleep while keeping those other familiar layers of comfort firmly in place. The breast is gradually removed from the settling process, but you are not.
Then, when your toddler is ready, I’ll show you how to gradually reduce your presence and support too, helping them develop the confidence and skills to fall asleep and return to sleep more independently.
For families who are currently co-sleeping, the approach can also guide you through the transition from sharing a sleep space to your toddler sleeping independently in their own cot and, ultimately, their own room if that’s your goal.
There’s no need to make all these changes at once. Each stage builds gently on the one before it, allowing you to work towards better, more independent sleep without taking away all those familiar sources of comfort and reassurance overnight.

At the heart of the guide is my carefully developed 7-step approach to night weaning, created and refined through years of supporting families through this transition.
There are no rigid timelines and no expectation that you rush through the stages. You can work through the process at a pace that feels right for you and your toddler, gradually reducing their reliance on breastfeeding while helping them discover new ways to feel safe, reassured and settled overnight.
You’ll also find practical guidance around:
• Recognising when you and your toddler may be ready to night wean

• Gradually separating feeding from falling asleep
• Responding to wakes without removing comfort and reassurance
• Involving your partner in the process
